La traviata

Verdi’s masterpiece of love and sacrifice

“Sexy, sublime and stunning” – The Creative Issue

More than 170 years after its premiere, Verdi’s La traviata continues to captivate audiences with its unflinching emotional honesty.

Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias, it centres on Violetta, one of opera’s psychologically richest heroines, who is forced to choose between love and the expectations of the world around her.

The score is one of Verdi’s greatest, pairing moments of dazzling theatricality with music of remarkable intimacy. Few operas trace a character’s inner life with such tenderness, insight and humanity.

Hailed as “an absolute triumph” (The AU Review), this acclaimed production, directed by award-winning Australian director Sarah Giles, finds fresh resonance in a work that remains as powerful and relevant today as it has ever been.
