Ō Mātou Whāinga

Our Mission & Values

It’s been over two decades, and New Zealand Opera hasn’t wasted a second. As a national company, we’ve presented more than 500 stage, touring, festival and concert performances to a combined audience of more than 800,000. And that’s just the beginning…

Whakarangatirahia te oranga Ahurea o Aotearoa

Enriching the Cultural Life of Aotearoa

We don’t just stage world-class performances, we bring outstanding Kiwi artists back to Aotearoa, showcase our local chorus talents, and nurture emerging stars on and off the stage.

Opera in Aotearoa is for all. We also design pioneering programmes to connect with Kiwi communities who might otherwise have never experienced the power of opera, including blind and low vision, young parents, school kids, tamariki and rangatahi. Over 100,000 have had the chance to watch, touch, hear, create and learn about the artform.

Our Ambition. Reimagining opera, singing the rich stories of Aotearoa and modelling a vibrant future for our artform.

What’s Next?   We’re reimagining opera to reflect our whenua and the diverse voices and stories of our people.  You’ll see modern takes on classics and all-new pieces that play with space, audiences and the artform itself.

Our Values

Mahitahi | Collaboration:

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari he toa takimano, takitini. Success is not the work of an individual, but the work of many.

Manaakitanga | Inspire:

Manaakitia ai te katoa e mātou. The best way to look forward is to look after all.

Auahatanga | Innovate:

Poipoia te kākano kia puāwai. Nurture the seed and it will blossom.

Mana Toi | Respect:

He toi whakairo, he mana tangata. Where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity.
