Baroque Heroines
Passion, grief, desire, triumph
“Emma Pearson sang with brilliance and beauty of tone… she owned the stage.” – Five Lines
Baroque opera explores the extremes of human emotion with imagination and intensity.
Led by internationally acclaimed soprano Emma Pearson, Baroque Heroines is a celebration of some of opera’s most compelling women. Drawing on music by composers including Handel, Monteverdi and Purcell, this richly curated programme brings together celebrated soloists, The Freemasons Foundation NZ Opera Chorus and a specialist Baroque orchestra in an experience that sits between concert and theatre.
Informed by Pearson’s widely recognised research into Baroque gesture, where physical storytelling becomes as expressive as the music itself, this performance reveals a theatrical language that was once integrated within the art form.
At once intimate, virtuosic and deeply theatrical, Baroque Heroines offers a rare opportunity to experience the beauty, drama and emotional power of Baroque opera.
