“La Bohème was the first opera I ever watched and I am glad to say I enjoyed it. I was amazed at how talented the cast was and especially during the second act I was on the edge of my seat ready to see what was going to happen next. La Bohème is sure to be the first of many operas I will watch and I am glad to have gained the experience of seeing this show.”
Opera in Schools
Every year, as part of New Zealand Opera’s participation programme we bring opera to children from as many regions as we can. Specially devised for kiwi kids from Primary and Intermediate, we do a range of activities. We organise and run workshops and masterclasses designed to inspire, educate and nurture aspiring artists. We invite school groups to attend our dress rehearsals in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which is a fantastic opportunity to introduce students to the world of professional theatre and opera.
The highlight of these initiatives are the Opera in Schools Tours which are fun and highly engaging productions of 45 minute adaptations of well-known operas. Singers perform in English and are accompanied by a pianist, featuring set and costumes designed to fit in the school hall. Following the performance, students have the opportunity to meet the artists, and learn more about opera. This is accompanied by a resource pack which gives you all the tools to bring opera into your school curriculum.
More details below on our next tour.
Tailored to Senior School-aged students with a keen interest in the arts, the Ambassador programme offers opportunities for connection with like-minded individuals, career pathways and networking, and unique experiences around each of our productions.
Join us for a taste of professional theatre-making in varied settings and attend rehearsals and events along the way.
Are you an Auckland based school student interested in Stage Management, Lighting, Design, Wardrobe, Wigs and Make-up?
We will be opening our Piano Stage rehearsal, on the afternoon of Friday 4 September 4.30pm – 7.30pm, to a select number of senior secondary school students who are keen to learn more about the various elements that go into staging a New Zealand Opera production.
Students will get the opportunity to tour the unique performance venue at Holy Trinity Cathedral, meet members of the Creative Team to hear about some of the decisions made for this particular production, as well as meet the talented personnel who provide all the support to bring the vision to the stage.
Those interested will need to fill in a Register of Interest form here.

‘Rare but amazing opportunity to bring students from our school to opera. To some, it’s once in a life-time, to most if not all their first-ever opera, and to some marked a memorable impact that might have ignited curiosity and desire to pursue that pathway. School is forever thankful for the kindness rendered to our students.’
‘I would just like to say thank you for letting me and my group from school share an experience that we would never forget. And I would like to thank you personally because the crew and characters blew me away from the beautiful voices and acting skills! I for sure would come and watch another spectacular performance! Thank you.’
