Opera in Schools: Red!
Sharing our artform with the next generation
Our 2026 toured work for Opera in Schools will be the vibrant children’s opera Red! by New Zealand composer Lucy Mulgan.
Specially created for primary-aged tamariki, Red! is a lively, interactive retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a modern twist, led by esteemed Director Jacqueline Coats and Music Director Brent Stewart (The Monster in the Maze). Through music and storytelling, it explores themes of courage, independence, and intergenerational connection — all wrapped up in a colourful, high-energy performance that sparks curiosity and creativity.
How does it work?
We bring the opera to you! We take care of everything – singers, pianist, set, costumes, and props. All you need to provide is an audience and a suitable performance space.
Your students will be part of the magic! We’re excited to add an element of student participation to our 2026 tour. Students can expect to:
- Learn (with our support) and perform 1–3 short choruses with the cast
- Experience a professional opera performance up close at their own school
- Meet the artists and ask questions in an interactive Q&A session
How to sign up
Cost: $5 per student (minimum of 200 students or equivalent payment)
Subsidised performances are available to schools that face financial or access barriers to hosting live arts experiences, thanks to the generosity of the Fehl Charitable Trust.
