Whakarangatirahia te oranga Ahurea o Aotearoa
Enriching the Cultural Life of Aotearoa
We don’t just stage world-class performances, we bring outstanding Kiwi artists back to Aotearoa, showcase our local chorus talents, and nurture emerging stars on and off the stage.
Opera in Aotearoa is for all. We also design pioneering programmes to connect with Kiwi communities who might otherwise have never experienced the power of opera, including blind and low vision, young parents, school kids, tamariki and rangatahi. Over 100,000 have had the chance to watch, touch, hear, create and learn about the artform.
Our Purpose. Telling stories through the power of the human singing voice, New Zealand Opera exists to serve our communities, our artists, and our artform.
Our Values
Mana Toi | Celebrating Aotearoa
We are storytellers, advancing our national conversation by making great opera. We respect and honour NZ artists and stories.
Mahitahi | Collaborative
We exist for, arise from, and work with our communities: Big Tent Opera | Doors Wide Open.
Manaakitanga | Connected
We are ground-up, not top-down. Community is our heart, audiences are our reason for being, artist development is our future.
Auahatanga | Distinctive
We continually ask ourselves: what can we do at NZO that no-one else is doing or can do?
