Lucy Mulgan is a composer, lyricist, arranger and bassist from Aotearoa New Zealand based in the UK. She predominantly composes and performs vocal music – often writing for and working with children, vulnerable adults and other community groups.
Since 2019 RED! has been performed by 1000+ young people in Aotearoa NZ and the UK – in 2025 at the Royal Opera House in London and in 10 primary schools across the SE of England with Barefoot Opera. It has been performed twice by NZOpera – in 2021 with Orchestra Wellington and in 2024 with Auckland Philharmonia in their Summer School Programme. Lucy’s latest opera Tales Untapped: A Rotherham Opera was commissioned by Royal Ballet & Opera with engagement from 2000+ young people – premiering November 2025.
Lucy’s music has also been performed by NZSO, Choirs Aotearoa, Stroma, BBC Philharmonic, Tête à Tête Opera Festival, London Gay Men’s Chorus, Military Wives Choirs and broadcast on BBC Radios 3&4 (UK) , BBC World (TV) and Concert FM (NZ) and Radio NZ.
Lucy remains an active bassist, performing at Grimeborn Opera Festival, London. She has a PhD in Composition from University of York (UK) and a Jazz Performance Diploma from Massey University (NZ).
