Sarah Castle

Appearing as Mother in the 2025 season of The Monster in the Maze

Sarah Castle was born in Wellington, and studied at Victoria University and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. Sarah has performed at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden; Bayreuth Festival; the San Francisco, Seattle and San Diego operas; Madrid; Munich; the New Israeli Opera; Polish National Opera; and Opera Australia, among many others companies.

Her highlights in contemporary music have been Elektra (Orest, Manfred Trojahn) and Marco (Marco Polo, Tan Dun) for Netherlands Opera; Mother (Girl with the Pearl Earring, Stefan Wirth) for Zurich Opera; and Swiss Grandmother (The Death ofKlinghoffer, John Adams) at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Sarah’s role in The Monster in the Maze marks her return to New Zealand Opera, having previously sung Ino/Juno (Semele, Handel) and the title role in La Cenerentola (Rossini).
