Cecilia Zhang

Mezzo-Soprano

Cecilia has participated in esteemed young artist programs, including Glyndebourne Opera’s Contemporary Opera Lab under artistic director Stephen Langridge, and the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme (2024/25), where she performed French mélodie under Susan Manoff and Véronique Gens at Snape Maltings. She is a Josephine Barker Trust Artist. In the past year, she has worked in public masterclasses with leading artists such as Gerald Finley, Brindley Sherratt, Angelika Kirchschlager, and Sir Simon Keenlyside. 

Before relocating to the UK, Cecilia graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland and was an inaugural young artist at Te Pae Kōkako Opera Studio, studying with Catrin Johnsson, supported by the Freemasons Foundation and Circle100. She was also a member of the New Zealand Opera School (2023). Cecilia has achieved recognition in several notable competitions, including runner-up positions in both the Becroft Aria Competition and the Dame Malvina Major Aria Competition (2023).

Cecilia’s versatility extends to both concert and contemporary repertoire. She has performed as a featured soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in the Kiwi Kapers Concert Series. In 2022, Cecilia premiered the role of Isabella Curran in Anthony Young’s chamber opera A Dream of Birds on Islands, which was recorded on film. Cecilia also performed regularly with Voices NZ and the New Zealand Youth Choir.
