Lucy Mulgan


Lucy is a composer, bassist and educator, who intertwines classical contemporary music with a jazz sensibility and a sense of humour. She loves working with words – especially writing for and working with children, vulnerable adults and other community groups.

Lucy grew up in Dunedin and trained first as a jazz bassist at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music (now School of Music). She moved to the UK in 1996 and completed a Ph.D. in Composition at the University of York UK in 2003. Her children’s opera Red! was commissioned by Barefoot Opera and premiered in the UK in 2020. Lucy’s music has been performed by the NZSO, BBC Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia (UK) and broadcast on BBC Radios 3&4 (UK),  BBC World (TV) and Concert FM and Radio NZ. She works as an arranger for the London Gay Men’s Chorus and Military Wives Choirs.

Lucy is a founding member of jazz-punk ensemble DOLLYman and she has performed as a bassist in the UK with Barefoot Opera, Longborough Festival Opera and Blackheath Halls Opera.
