Kátya Kabanova 2017

16 September - 14 October

A brilliant showcase of singing actors, orchestral colour and heartbreaking emotions, this powerfully emotional tragedy weaves a dreamlike, visceral story of isolation and oppression.

Conducted by Director of Music, Wyn Davies, it is directed by Patrick Nolan, whose past New Zealand Opera productions include the unforgettable Eugene Onegin and La bohème.

Kátya is caught in a loveless marriage where she is dominated by an overbearing mother-in-law. She discovers true love with another man but ultimately is unable to find happiness or peace. In this contemporary reimagining of the story, Kátya’s plight is understandable, hopeless and all too frequently echoed in modern society.

Opera in three acts by Leoš Janáček. Libretto by Leoš Janáček, adapted from Vincenc Červinka’s translation of Alexander Ostrovsky’s play The Storm. The first performance was at the National Theatre (Národní divadlov Brně) in Brno on 23 November 1921.

These performances of Kátya Kabanová by Leoš Janáček (edited by: Sir Charles Mackerras) are given by permission of Hal Leonard

“This courageous production, premiered in Seattle this year, is a major achievement in our own operatic history.” – William Dart, The New Zealand Herald

“This is a performance that every Auckland opera-lover should see – such a gripping, emotional night in the lyric theatre is rare on these shores indeed. *****”Bachtrack

“CI loved the sets, which both enclose and expose the raw emotions on display; the scene in the forest with the thunder and lightning is brilliantly done with stunning, almost black-and-white, lighting.” – Stuff
