A children’s opera.

Orchestra Wellington and New Zealand Opera come together at the Opera House in Wellington with supremely talented composer Lucy Mulgan to create a brand new operatic work for 2021. Taking the well-known and much-loved story of Little Red Riding Hood and injecting some first-class audible entertainment, this freshly composed piece will see over 200 children on stage for each performance, ensuring this spectacle is not one to be missed. Starring soprano Natasha Wilson as Red, mezzo-soprano Catrin Johnsson as Mum/Granny, and globally renowned bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu as Wolfie – this may be a children’s opera, but there is absolutely nothing juvenile about the quality on display. This fantastic, fun-filled afternoon and evening with direction by Jacqueline Coats and music direction by Brent Stewart, will see Orchestra Wellington and NZ Opera at their brilliant best.

Red! was originally commissioned by UK independent opera company Barefoot Opera and a pilot production premiered in Hastings UK in March 2020.

Duration: 45 minutes

New Zealand Opera benefactors are invited to attend one of the performances.  RSVP’s are required to secure tickets.
