Last year, Orchestra Wellington and New Zealand Opera came together at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington with London-based Kiwi composer Lucy Mulgan to create RED!, a children’s opera based on the much loved story of Little Red Riding Hood. The performance was captured beautifully by RNZ Concert and SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music, and funded by NZ On Air. The video is available to watch now.
By introducing children to the exhilarating world of opera with storytelling, music, drama and movement, using relatable themes such as the acceptance of others and the importance of inter-generational relationships, RED! addresses issues facing children today such as bullying, gaining independence, and establishing identity.
Performed by Orchestra Wellington (conductor Brent Stewart) and directed by Jacqueline Coats, stars Natasha Te Rupe Wilson (Red), Robert Tucker (Wolfie) and Catrin Johnsson (Mum/Granny) are joined on stage by children’s choirs from Kelburn Normal School, Holy Cross School, Miramar North School, Newtown School and Northland School.
Originally commissioned and performed by Barefoot Opera in the UK, RED! is packed with charm, affirmation and energy- a must see for young families!
