- What is Voices of Aotearoa 6:24
Voices of Aotearoa 6:24 is a brand new development opportunity for writers, composers, instrumentalists and opera singers. The pilot programme, created by New Zealand Opera, will see 24 creatives put into six teams, tasked with combining their unique skills and experiences to create a short song.
- What does it cost to be involved?
There is no fee to apply or participate in Voices of Aotearoa 6:24. Flights, accommodation and a per diem will be provided to accepted participants from outside of Auckland.
- Who can apply?
New Zealand Opera is looking for singers (opera trained), writers, musicians and composers based anywhere in New Zealand, of any age and stage in their careers. We hope for a broad mix of applications representing the cultural diversity of Aotearoa. While the singer must be opera trained, the writer, musician and composer may come from any background or genre.
- Who are the coaches?
New Zealand Opera’s General Director and Head of Music will be the key people running the workshops and providing coaching. Additional coaches will be involved in person or via video.
- Who owns the songs the groups create?
New Zealand Opera and the singer may use the song for two years. Any other performances will be subject to royalties in the usual way, with the ownership of the song shared by the group.
- What if I can’t commit to both workshops?
It is imperative that applicants make themselves available for both workshops, please do not apply if this is not possible for you.
- Does our song have to be in English?
No. The song can be in any language agreed by the group. In the event that a song is in another language, a written English translation would be required.
- Does the song have to be operatic?
The singers selected for Voices of Aotearoa 6:24 are operatically trained, but the style of music and writing can be anything.
- How do I apply?

- What do I submit with my application?
You will be asked to submit examples of your work. Written text, documents, jpeg images, video links, sound file links. We accept most file formats.
- Will there be auditions held?
No we will not require auditions, we will be selecting participants based off the submitted examples of work with the application.
- Where are the workshops being held?
These are being held in our Parnell studios.
